Map Projections, Coordinate Systems & Modified UTM for Nepal
Idea in plain words
Earth Shape Models: Sphere, Geoid (equipotential surface of Earth's gravity field), and Reference Ellipsoid (mathematical oblate spheroid: WGS84, Everest 1830).
Exam tip
High-yield exam topic (Very High).
Explanation
Projecting the curved Earth onto a flat sheet inevitably introduces distortion. Conformal projections (like Mercator) preserve local angles and shapes at the expense of distorting areas near the poles; equal-area projections preserve area ratios but distort shapes. The standard UTM projection uses 6-degree zones with a central meridian scale factor of 0.9996. Because Nepal extends east-west over 800 km across extreme elevation gradients, standard 6-degree UTM zones produced unacceptable scale distortion along national borders. The Survey Department of Nepal established Modified UTM (MUTM) based on the Everest 1830 ellipsoid, utilizing 3-degree zones centered at 84°E and 87°E with a central scale factor of 0.9999 and False Easting of 500,000m.
Key points
- Geodetic Datum: Defines the size and shape of the reference ellipsoid and the origin point (e.g., WGS84, Everest 1830).
- Map Projection: Mathematical transformation of the curved 3D surface of the Earth onto a flat 2D map plane.
- Projection Distortions: Projections inevitably distort Shape (Conformal), Area (Equivalent), Distance (Equidistant), or Direction (Azimuthal).
- Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM): Cylindrical conformal projection dividing Earth into 60 longitudinal zones of 6 degrees each.
- Modified UTM (MUTM) for Nepal: Divides Nepal into two narrower 3-degree longitudinal zones (Central Meridians: 84°E and 87°E) with scale factor 0.9999 to limit scale distortion across the Himalayas.
Example
Example
A road surveyed in Pokhara uses MUTM Zone 84°E, while a cadastral plot in Biratnagar uses MUTM Zone 87°E to minimize cartographic measurement errors.

Exam questions
- [10 Marks] What is a Map Projection? Explain the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection and detail the Modified UTM (MUTM) parameters designed for Nepal.
- [6 Marks] Differentiate between Geoid, Ellipsoid, and Datum. Why is Everest 1830 preferred for Nepal's national cadastral maps over WGS84?
