Cloud Data Centers: SDDC, NFV & Hyperconverged Infrastructure
Idea in plain words
Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC): Architectural model where compute, storage, and networking are virtualized and provisioned automatically via software policy APIs.
Exam tip
High-yield exam topic (High).
Explanation
Traditional data centers suffer from slow manual provisioning: deploying a new application required racking physical servers, cabling proprietary hardware switches, and carving LUNs out of complex Storage Area Networks (SANs). In a Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC), the entire underlying physical hardware is abstracted into unified resource pools. Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Ansible) automates the instant deployment of virtual machines, virtual overlay networks, and distributed software-defined storage across commodity x86 servers.
Key points
- Compute Virtualization (Hypervisors: VMware ESXi, KVM), Storage Virtualization (Ceph, vSAN), Network Virtualization (SDN - OpenFlow, VMware NSX).
- Network Functions Virtualization (NFV): Replacing proprietary physical network appliances (firewalls, routers, load balancers) with virtualized software containers.
- Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI): Tightly integrates compute, software-defined storage, and virtualization into standard x86 commodity server building blocks (Nutanix, vSAN).
- Hybrid Cloud Connectivity: Dedicated private low-latency connections linking on-premise data centers to cloud infrastructure (AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute).
Example
Example
Deploying a virtual firewall and load-balancer cluster in 30 seconds via Terraform API calls in an SDDC rather than waiting weeks to procure and cable physical appliances.
